Planning & Flying Travel Tips

Before You Go

  • Check your documents early
Passports, visas, vaccination cards, ID — scan and store digital copies (secure cloud or encrypted email).
Leave a set of soft copies with someone you trust back home.

  • Seat choice matters
If you can, pick your seat early. Prefer aisle? Need legroom? Do it before it’s gone.

  • Pack wisely
Bring a change of clothes in your carry-on. Include essentials (meds, chargers, underwear).
Consider airport delays, lost bags, or sudden schedule changes.

  • Download ahead
Get your airline app, maps, destination guides (access while offline). Also store boarding pass pdfs/screenshots.

  • Check travel alerts & entry rules
Visa rules, COVID/vaccine requirements, security rules — verify 72 h before departure. https://travel.state.gov/en/international-travel.html

  • Plan transitions
Know how you’ll get from the airport to your lodging (shuttle, train, ride-share). Book in advance if possible.

During Your Trip

  • Arrive early, not just on time
For domestic: aim 2 hours before departure; for international: 3 hours. You’ll thank yourself.

  • Stay in the loop
Monitor flight alerts via the airline app. Get used to flight statuses changing—sometimes on short notice.

  • Hydrate + move
Drink water, stretch, walk the cabin aisles. Helps with fatigue and jet lag.

  • Use lounge or early-access perks
If you can, take advantage — quiet waiting space, food, comfortable seating.

  • Roll with the (inevitable) punches
Delays, rebookings, gate changes — breathe, stay calm, and talk to airline staff politely. They’re more likely to help when you’re reasonable.

  • Have backup contacts
Hotel address, local contact numbers, and your Travel Insurance’s emergency line (if applicable). Also have cash in local currency, in case card systems glitch.
